Wizard Barristers is set in 2018, where humans and wizards live together in Tokyo. While the police continue to protect the peace, wizards are tried according to magical law through Magic Prohibition Law. Wizards are taken to special courts, where they are defended by wizard barristers via the Court of Magic.
17-year-old Canadian-Japanese girl Cecil Sudo has become the youngest wizard barrister after passing the bar exam at 15. At the beginning of the series, she begins working for the Butterfly Law Offices.
Episode three sees Cecil being approached by a couple of guys from the Shark Knight Law Office, and they try to convince Cecil to come work for them. Cecil turns then down. When Hotaru learns that Cecil has been scouted by Shark Knight, she becomes jealous. Later, when Hotaru goes out to lunch with one of their co-workers, she finally admits publicly that she’s jealous of Cecil. When Hotaru asks the co-worker not to tell Cecil, I had to keep from laughing. I kept thinking, “Sweetheart, if you don’t want Cecil to know you’re jealous, quit letting it show through your facial expressions, tone of voice, and the things you say. You’re doing a pretty good job of letting Cecil know on your own.”
However, most of the episode focuses on Hachiya, one of the men who work at Butterfly Law Offices. He used to be a prosecutor, but after his magical powers awakened two years ago, he was discharged as a prosecutor and became a wizard barrister.
Before his awakening, he was the prosecutor at a trial for an actor who used his ice magic to freeze a fellow film stuntman, stopping his heart and killing him instantly. The actor insisted he was innocent and that his manager told him to do it. He was found guilty and sentenced to death.
Hachiya is now approached by the actor’s girlfriend, Mayu, who is now accused of causing an explosion and killing a victim. Through dental records, it’s revealed the victim was Mayu’s boyfriend’s manager. Hachiya asks Cecil to help him on the case, with the objective of trying to get a sentence of life imprisonment instead of the death penalty.
While Hachiya and Cecil succeed in getting the life imprisonment sentence, Mayu does something unexpected. Mayu’s actions bring about the climax of the episode.
I was glad to see an episode of the series that focused on another member of the Butterfly Law Offices besides Cecil. While Cecil may be the main character, the others in the office also need to be developed as characters. Previous to this episode, Hachiya came off as being a bit aloof. After seeing him and his backstory in this episode, I’ve come to appreciate Hachiya more as a character and I understand him more. I grew to like him quite a bit.
Cecil does get an important piece of the action during the climax in the courtroom, and what happens here only adds to Hotaru’s jealousy of Cecil. Is anyone else as annoyed at Hotaru as I am?
You know how Cecil has that perverted male frog as a sidekick? It turns out that Hachiya has a female pig sidekick. So far, outside of seeing these animals acting horny with their masters and helping out around the house, I’m not really seeing a reason for them to be there. I hope that there ends up being a good reason for these animal sidekicks to be around, because right now, I find them to be the weakest element of the series.
Outside of the animal mascots, I’m enjoying Wizard Barristers. I’m looking forward to seeing episode four and finding out what case will come to the Butterfly Law Offices.
