The American Library Association’s Gay, Lesbian, Bisexual, and Transgender Round Table (GLBTRT) has selected Takako Shimura’s Wandering Son manga for its Rainbow List. Wandering Son has been chosen for the list three years in a row, and was the first manga to ever be included. The yearly Rainbow List includes fiction and graphic novels focusing on gay, lesbian, bisexual, transexual, and queer themes for children and teens.

Previously, Wandering Son was selected by the ALA’s Young Adult Library Services Association (YALSA) division as one of the top 10 graphic novels for teens in 2012.

The story of Wandering Son centers around a feminine fifth-grade boy named Shūichi Nitori. On the first day at his new school, he is mistaken for his 6th-grade sister. He happens to sit next to Yoshino Takatsuki, a girl who wishes she was a boy. Both of them have secrets they cannot tell anyone.
