Manga In Memoriam: 2013

Remembering those in the manga field who passed away in 2013:

  • Kiichi Toyoda, the first editor-in-chief of Shogakugan’s Weekly Shonen Sunday magazine, passed away on January 10 at the age of 87 from acute heart failure.
  • Yuji Nishi, creator of the Ando Natsu – Edo Wagashi Shokunin Monogatari manga, passed away on February 6 at the age of 59 due to stomach cancer.
  • Toren Smith, manga translator, passed away on March 5 at the age of 52.
  • Isuka Hakozaki, creator of the Caterpillar manga series, passed away suddenly at the age of 27. The date of death is not known, but it is assumed he died in April 2013.
  • Kim Thompson, co-publisher and co-owner of Fantagraphics Books, passed away on June 19 at the age 56 after a battle with lung cancer.
  • Yasuda, Comic LO manga artist, passed away at the age of 24 due to a sudden illness.
  • Jun Sadogawa, manga creator, passed away on August 13 at the age of 34 due to an apparent suicide.
  • Takashi Yanase, creator of the Anpanman manga and anime, passed away on October 13 at the age of 94 due to heart failure.
  • Yanwari Kazama, creator of the Taberemasen manga, passed away on October 22 at the age of 36 due to liver failure.
  • Ichiro Tsunohazu, manga artist, passed away on November 3 due to illness.
