Tokyo Ravens: Episode 10 – “GIRL RETURN -Prodigy-“

Tokyo Ravens is an anime that follows a young man named Harutora Tsuchimikado. He was born into an onmyo family, but he had no power whatsoever. He is a member of the Tsuchimikado branch family, and the branch family is expected to serve the members of the main family. At the end of episode two, Harutora officially became the familiar for Natsume, his cousin from the main family who is believed to be the reincarnation of their ancestor, Yakou Tsuchimikado.

In episode four, Harutora and his friend Touji relocate to Tokyo to attend the Onmyo Preparatory School in order to be near Natsume. At school, Natsume has to pose as a boy, and she ends up getting a bit of unwanted attention due to the belief that she is the reincarnation of Yakou.

Episode 10 opens with the entrance ceremony for the new students entering Onmyo Prep at the start of the new school year. Harutora, Natsume, and Touji get a surprise when they see that the representative for the new students is none other than Suzuka Dairenji, the girl who tried to resurrect her brother earlier in the series. However, she’s acting rather sickeningly sweet and different from how we saw her before. When she sees Harutora in the audience, she flashes him the evil grin that he remembers. She goes so far as to call him out by name and then tell everyone that Harutora was her first kiss.

Unfortunately, everyone at school starts buzzing about this and giving Harutora a hard time. To add to this, Natsume keeps trying to hide when Suzuka’s around, because she’s afraid Suzuka will recognize her as the priestess who was with Harutora. During the episode, it becomes a running gag for Suzuka to suddenly show up somewhere and announce her presence to Harutora, and Natsume trying to find ways to hide without being noticed.

We learn that Suzuka is at Onmyo Prep as a punishment for what she had done the previous year. The higher ups ultimately decided that her recklessness was caused by a lack of common sense that was a result of her family environment; it’s also thought that if something happened, it could be taken care of internally.

This episode also sees Harutora encountering a strange blonde-haired girl who claims to be a third year student at the school. She moves in ways that don’t seem natural, and she also speaks in a rather low and monotone way. This has all the hallmarks of someone not being entirely human. I’m not sure if she’s an android or robot or something, but she definitely isn’t acting like a regular human. I suspect we’ll be seeing more of her as the series progresses.

I hadn’t anticipated Suzuka making a return to the series, so I was just as surprised as Harutora and the others during the entrance ceremony scene. I don’t want to give away what happens during the episode, but it’s clear by the end of it that Suzuka intends to continue being a pain in the butt for Harutora. I also feel rather confident in saying that we haven’t seen the last of her.

Now with Suzuka being added to the mix at Onmyo Prep, I’m very curious to see how this story arc, as well as the overarching story, will go forward in future episodes. I’ve been enjoying Tokyo Ravens, and I think bringing Suzuka back adds an interesting element that will keep me coming back to watch more.
