I Couldn’t Become a Hero, So I Reluctantly Decided to Get a Job. features a young man named Raul Chaser, who was working to pass his Hero Exam. Unfortunately, before he could become a hero, the hero program was suspended; the Demon Lord is gone and the demon empire has collapsed, so it’s decided there’s no longer a need for the program. Raul is now working at an electronics store called the Leon Magic Shop, and during the first episode he gets a new co-worker: Fino, the daughter of the Demon Lord.
This is another episode of the series that Crunchyroll has designated being appropriate for viewers 18 years of age and older due to content, and will require you to log in to view it. However, I really didn’t see anything in this episode that would warrant this kind of designation.
This episode sees the staff at Leon getting their paycheck. It’s noted that since sales didn’t drop, even with the opening of Amada, corporate gave everyone a bonus for their work. This turns out to be Fino’s first pay day, and she’s not entirely sure what to do with the money. The manager orders Raul to accompany Fino on a shopping trip the next day to help her get some of the necessities that she needs.
The majority of this episode is a rather light-hearted romp of Raul taking Fino shopping, with Fino experiencing many things for the first time. There’s one point during their excursion that Fino leaves while Raul is distracted, and it almost appears that something bad happened to Fino. Fortunately, what happens to Fino isn’t what it seems. During their shopping trip together, Fino and Raul seem to start realizing that they have feelings for each other, but they don’t say anything.
The end of the episode actually gets serious, though, when Fino is attacked by a couple of heroes. She finds herself wondering if she should become the next Demon Lord so the world can have heroes again.
However, her wondering about becoming the Demon Lord didn’t come out of nowhere. Earlier in the episode, while she was out shopping with Raul, she makes the connection that the customers who come to Leon and their money helps to pay for her wages. She then wonders if perhaps something she bought was made by one of their customers, and then she adds that everyone’s connected. She concludes that earning money for herself ends up helping others. Raul is actually quite amazed, and he realizes that he had never thought of it that way before. It’s through using that logic where Fino wonders whether it might be better to become the Demon Lord, since the defeat of her father put people out of work.
For the most part, this episode was cute and amusing, and it does start finally progressing a potential Raul and Fino pairing. And by doing the shopping, Fino starts making connections that ultimately lead her to wonder if perhaps she should be doing something different than what she’s doing. There were also a couple of times in the episode where someone was watching Fino from the shadows, and I believe it’s someone connected to the head of Amada, due to information that was revealed right at the end of episode eight. Hopefully this will become a more important plot point in the next episode, because it does feel like the series is leading up to its climax at this point.
