Anime News Network is reporting that Studio Ghibli President Koji Hoshino announced during a press conference at Italy’s Venice Film Festival that Hayao Miyazaki will “retire from the production of feature-length films.”

It will be interesting to see if Miyazaki truly does stop directing anime feature films, since he had said after Princess Mononoke that he wouldn’t make any more films but ultimately returned to filmmaking with Spirited Away.

And as Anime News Network’s article points out, this announcement doesn’t rule out the possibility of Miyazaki working on shorter projects or on other endeavors.
