Servant x Service: Episode 7 – “Self Prevention, There Are People Where You Can’t See”

Servant x Service is an anime series set in a government office building in Japan, and most of the main characters are new employees in the Welfare Department. Lucy Yamagani takes her job seriously, Yutaka Hasebe is a slacker, Saya Miyoshi is a nervous person, Megumi Chihaya is the temp worker who likes to cosplay and create doujinshi, Taishi Ichimiya is a first time supervisor who really doesn’t know how to lead others well, Toko Ichimiya is Taishi’s little sister who drops by the Welfare Department rather regularly and causes problems for Taishi and the others, Kenzo Momoi is a stuffed rabbit who can walk and talk and serves as the section manager for the Welfare Department, and Kanon Momoi is Kenzo’s daughter and Toko’s friend.

The first half of episode seven focuses on Taishi and Megumi’s relationship. The story focuses on the fact that there appears to be a strain developing between the two of them, due to how much they have to sneak around, not showing any real interaction between them at work, and hiding their relationship from Toko. Unfortunately, section manager Kenzo is not aware of their romantic relationship, and decides to meddle in order for them to be able to interact better together; this doesn’t really help anything.

The second half of the episode continues the storyline from episode six for Saya. Tanaka’s grandson comes to the Welfare Department to see Saya, and while he’s there he sees Yutaka. Tanaka suddenly jumps over the desk and rushes toward Yutaka. After this, Tanaka comes by the office every day and asks where Yutaka is; Yutaka hides out when he’s there. During a conversation with Lucy, Yutaka says that since they were young, Tanaka hated to lose and always challenged Yutaka to games; however, Tanaka always lost.

I really enjoyed seeing the first half of the story delving more into Taishi and Megumi’s relationship. This story also shows just how clueless Toko really is about her older brother’s relationship with Megumi, and in a way, this cluelessness can be rather amusing. However, I’m wondering if it’s being set up for Toko to find out what’s really going on between them before the series ends. And if she does, I suspect all hell will break loose from the hot-headed Toko.

By the time I finished watching the story with Tanaka, I was left with the impression that Yutaka hasn’t told the entire story about why Tanaka seems to be stalking him. Maybe it’s just me, but the story about always losing feels like it’s only part of the story. I hope that future episodes might reveal that there’s something more. If it turns out that this really is the entire story for this plot, I’ll be a little disappointed. Also, it’ll be interesting to see if anything more happens in regards to Tanaka and Saya.

Servant x Service is an anime series that I’ve really come to like and look forward to watching a new episode each week. I can’t wait to see episode eight in order to find out what happens to the employees in the Welfare Department.
