Anime Soundtrack Review: Space Battleship Yamato Background Music Collection 1

Space Battleship Yamato Background Music Collection 1 is a soundtrack CD of the background music from Space Battleship Yamato: The Movie and the first set of episodes of the Space Battleship Yamato television anime series, as well as the opening and ending theme songs. This 32-track CD was released on May 18, 2005.

The CD opens with the iconic opening theme for Space Battleship Yamato being performed by Sasaki Isao and the Royal Knights. The final track on the CD is “Scarlet Scarf,” which is the ending theme song for Space Battleship Yamato; this song is also performed by Sasaki Isao and the Royal Knights. In my opinion, this disc is worth having simply to be able to have these two iconic songs from the series on CD.

29 of the remaining 30 tracks on the disc are all background music tracks that are familiar to viewers of either Space Battleship Yamato and/or Star Blazers. Track number 30 is actually a collection of several themes used at the ending of various episodes in the first Space Battleship Yamato series; these themes range anywhere from 11 to 35 seconds in length. I found it a little puzzling why these tracks were put together in one track on the CD, rather than split out into five shorter tracks. I can only guess that whoever compiled this CD decided it was better to only have 32 tracks instead of 38. When it comes to the length of the 32 tracks on the CD, the longest one is about three minutes long.

As a long-time fan of Space Battleship Yamato and Star Blazers, I have a hard time simply putting this CD in and listen to the music in the background. The music composed for the series is just so memorable that it grabs me and distracts me from whatever else I’m doing at the time when I listen to this CD. When I hear many of the pieces included on Space Battleship Yamato Background Music Collection 1, I can’t help but sit there and see the scenes in my mind that these pieces originally came from.

Unfortunately, Space Battleship Yamato Background Music Collection 1 isn’t a very easy CD to come across, because it was never released in North America. It’s also gotten to a point that it’s becoming harder to buy the imports outside of Japan. However, if you’re really interested in trying to obtain a copy of this CD in order to add it to your anime music collection, I would recommend looking around at reputable websites that sell import CDs and seeing which one can acquire you a copy of this CD for a reasonable price.

If you’re a fan of Space Battleship Yamato or Star Blazers, and enjoy the background music from the series, then this CD would be a great addition to your anime music CD library.

I wrote this review after listening to a copy of Space Battleship Yamato Background Music Collection 1 that my husband purchased.
