Barefoot Gen Manga Creator Keiji Nakazawa Passes Away

Keiji Nakazawa, the creator of the Barefoot Gen manga, passed away on December 19, 2012 due to lung cancer. He was 73 years old at the time of his passing.

Nakazawa was born in Hiroshima in 1939. When he was six years old, he survived the Hirsohima bombing. However, he lost his father, older sister, younger brother, and younger sister. Only Nakazawa, his mother, and his other two brothers survived.

He moved to Tokyo in 1961, and then became a published manga creator in 1963. He created the title Kuroi Ame ni Utarete after the passing of his mother in 1966. His most famous work is Barefoot Gen, which was published from 1973 to 1985. The 10 volumes of Barefoot Gen have sold over 6.5 million copies and have been translated in over 10 languages.

Nakazawa had undergone treatment for lung cancer and related ailments in 2010 and 2011.
